When asked what being a woman in business means to Melanie Woodard, owner of Talk of the Town Nails, she used one word: empowerment. “We are making other women look and feel good. There is nothing more empowering than giving that to someone!” She believes that we should always be building each other up. “We are truly better together.” She not only wants to empower the women who walk into her salon, but the ones who are working there each day. Melanie urges everyone to reach for the stars, always dream big and to never hold anything back. Twenty-five years ago, a young Melanie was working for Salon Diangelo’s in Winter Haven as a nail technician. She was building her clientele, sharpening her skills and making long lasting connections with the people of Winter Haven. When Melanie and her husband found out they were expecting their first child, they soon realized she wasn’t making enough money to sustain a new family member, and at a “family meeting” her in-laws encouraged her to open up her own salon. “I couldn’t believe how confident they were in me when I thought that I couldn’t do it,” Melanie shared. With her in-laws encouragement and a new-found confidence, Melanie decided to open Talk of the Town Nails in Bells Alley Plaza. Fast forward a couple of years, to 1997, and it was time to expand into a bigger space to grow her team and the services they offer. Talk of the Town Nails has now grown from just nails services to providing pedicures, manicures, facials, eye-lash extensions, micro-blading, hair services, waxing and more. Talk of the Town’s growth comes from Melanie’s firm belief in investing in her staff and providing them with opportunities to enhance their skills through continuing education. “This place would be nothing without the staff. They are like family and investing in them is very important to me and the business.” she explained. In her profession, things are constantly changing so education is vitally important to staying ahead of new trends, while also creating a professional experience in the salon. Teamwork is also Melanie’s top priority, “Even though these ladies pay to rent space here, I never want them to feel like I am better than them. I always want them to know that we can only grow by working together as a team.” Because Melanie has instilled a sense of family in her business, her team works together seamlessly. Aside from creating a healthy work environment for her co-workers, she prides herself on creating a relaxing experience for all of her clients. Clients can come to Talk of the Town Nails and expect a peaceful experience, where customer service is top priority. “Creating close relationships with my clients has made my work even more fun than it already is. I want them to feel at home when they walk in.” Melanie says. Melanie feels a sense of collaboration being mirrored in the Winter Haven community. After all these years, she is still in awe of the supportive spirit of the people and businesses here, “Our clientele is exceptional, everyone comes in with love and support and it makes you want to give back.” Melanie says that this past year has been their busiest yet and she doesn’t see it slowing down anytime soon. Talk of the Town’s foundation in Winter Haven has been a strong one and they couldn’t imagine being in business anywhere else. Melanie has been a shining star to the women of Winter Haven, encouraging them to run towards the finish line without fear of failure and looking good while doing it. We are excited to see her continue to flourish in her business and community for many years to come.
