Free Prostate Screening Exams - Central Florida Cancer Institute

December 06, 2008 at 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Central Florida Cancer Institute is offering FREE prostate screening exams on Saturday, December 6, 2008 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at their Winter Haven location. The exams are for the early detection of prostate cancer and will be administered by the board-certified physicians of the Institute.

To be eligible for the screening, men must meet the American Cancer Society screening criteria, as follows: African American men and/or men with a family history of prostate cancer are at higher risk and should begin screening at age 45. If a man has neither of these characteristics, he should begin at age 50.

The procedure consists of a prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test which is used to detect the amount of PSA released into a man’s blood by his prostate gland. The amount of PSA in the blood normally increases as a man’s prostate enlarges with age.

The PSA is followed by a digital rectal exam (DRE) in which the physician will physically check for problems with organs or other structures in the pelvis and lower abdomen. Medical oncologists, Salim Contractor, M.D., and Jay Wang, M.D., along with urologist, Reginald Allen, M.D., will perform these examinations.Due to limited availability, please make your appointment today by calling (863) 293-6375.
