Polk State College will host its 19th annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration on Wednesday, January 11, 2023, at noon in the Winter Haven Campus Student Center (WST). The event is free and open to the public and will include lunch, entertainment, and a keynote by Dr. Hezedean A. Smith, Chief of Polk County Fire Rescue.
This year the event returns to campus after being held virtually during the COVID-19 public health emergency. This signature event, developed annually by Polk State's Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in partnership with the Polk State College Foundation, Student Activities & Leadership Office, and Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP), has become a tradition enjoyed not only by the College but also by the greater community. Enrollment is open at Polk State College for the Spring 2023 Semester, which will begin on January 9. Currently enrolled students can register for classes in Passport. Prospective students must submit a free online application to Polk State. The application, as well as information about the admission and registration processes, is available at polk.edu/admission-aid/admissionsteps. Dual enrollment students should work with their high school advisors and email DEregistration@polk.edu if they need additional assistance. Special delivery! LEGOLAND® Florida Resort just unveiled the newest vehicle in its LEGO® brick build fleet – the Ford F-150® Lightning™, now on display in the Theme Park in front of the Ford® Driving School. A team of 15 Master Model Builders started building the truck in mid-July at The LEGO Group’s U.S. headquarters in Enfield, Conn. The team spent more than 1,600 hours assembling the design, which includes 320,740 LEGO® bricks. The new 3,730-pound build measures in at more than 19 feet long and nearly 7 feet wide, making this the largest (and first!) electric vehicle model currently on display at any LEGOLAND® Park in North America. For the first time since 2009, Polk State Soccer is bound for the final site of the national NJCAA Tournament. Formerly Family Fundamentals, this move and rebranding will add more programming and feature more exposure to the community at large. Founded in 1995 by Carol Jenkins Barnett, former director of Publix Super Markets Charities, and spearheaded by United Way of Central Florida, the Children's Resource Center was developed to help make early childhood education a top priority in our community. LEGOLAND Florida Theme Park and Peppa Pig Theme Park reopened on Saturday, Oct. 1 following an incredible clean-up effort by the Resort’s dedicated team of employees and partners. LEGOLAND® Water Park will reopen on Saturday, Oct 8. Two of the Water Park’s slides, the Twin Chasers and Splash Out, will remain temporary closed. Bartow Ford is sending its event plans into high gear with an incredible Country Music concert that will feature Florida’s own Country superstar Michael Ray. Bartow Ford is partnering with 97 Country and The Dallas Bull for the November 5 event, which will be held at the dealership.
