Theatre Winter Haven is in the midst of producing a new original play called, “The Veterans Project,” which is written locally and inspired by 42 local military veterans. These veterans have been interviewed by Darian Henne and Katrina Ploof as inspiration for the script and production itself. The interviewing process started in 2016 and the play is said to launch in November of 2017. Interviewees served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam as well as younger veterans who are still active in the field. The veterans that Theatre Winter Haven has been in contact with are very excited to be a part of sharing these important stories with the public. As quoted in The Ledger article, Louis Calabretta a former U.S Army National Guard said, “I’m very honored for what our veterans do every day. This is a tremendous way to give back and let them share their stories.”
Although it wasn’t the main focus of this production, there are a few combat stories, as well as recalling boot camp, returning to civilian life and so much more. After seeing a similar performance dealing with veterans and their incredible stories, Producing Director Dan Chesnicka felt that the veterans in our area should have the chance to tell their stories to the community. To create an authentic performance, Theatre Winter Haven desires to use veterans to play the roles in the production Be on the lookout for “The Veterans Project,” coming Veterans Day weekend November 2017.
