Chamber Board of Directors Passes a Resolution of Support for the Renewal of the 1/2 cent School sales tax

A RESOLUTION OF THE GREATER WINTER HAVEN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SUPPORTING THE RENEWAL OF THE POLK COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS “POLK PROMISE” ½ CENT SALES TAX

In 2003, the citizens of Polk County approved a half-cent sales tax to address critical building and capacity needs of the Polk County Public Schools. Over the last 15-years an independent committee, appointed by the school board, has overseen the management of these funds, which have yielded numerous capital improvements, improved technology and safety initiatives for our county’s schools.
The Board of Directors of the Greater Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce supports the renewal of the Polk County Public Schools half-cent sales tax for the following reasons:

A prime example of the success of this tax is the improvements to Winter Haven High School, which as result of the renovations saw students return to the school versus exploring alternative options.
The aging infrastructure of our community’s schools can be a deterrent to families moving to our area, which correlates directly to our community’s ability to attract and/or retain businesses.
Because this tax is a sales tax, which we have already become accustomed to paying over the last 15 years, the impact per person and/or family is kept very low. Many people contribute a small amount to generate a large impact.
The district has outlined a plan for spending, which includes addressing safety, technology, capacity issues and aging infrastructure of our Winter Haven community schools in addition to the construction of two new schools in southeast Winter Haven.

Winter Haven is one of the fastest growing communities in the country. Several thousand new homes are already in the pipeline to be built over the next 5 years. The need for more schools and improved infrastructure at our existing is obvious. For the reasons stated above, the Greater Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce encourages the voters of Polk County to approve the renewal of the “Polk Promise” half-cent sales tax.
