The Women’s Guild of Theatre Winter Haven, Florida’s premier community theatre, is pleased to announce that Ruth Hooper has been elected as its incoming President. While Sally Wagner, the outgoing President of the Guild, turns the gavel over to Ruth, both ladies acknowledge that the challenge will be to continue the work that was started by a few dedicated individuals who had the vision and determination and were willing to do the work that helped mold our little theater into becoming the most honored community theatre in the South. The Women’s Guild was established in the spring of 1983 by a small group of women who had a passion for the Arts and especially our own community theatre. The original members came from all walks of life, each with a love for the theater and a determination to be a part of helping the up and coming “Jewel of Winter Haven” become just that. From its origination, the Guild has raised money, hosted social events, acted as hostesses for opening night parties and just about anything the Producing Director Norman Small requested. They have conducted garage sales, held progressive dinners, offered raffle tickets, undertaken auctions and once even produced a mystery dinner theater all to assist financially the many needs of our jewel.
Over the past thirty-two years, through Guild fund raising efforts, the theatre has been the benefactor of many projects which include everything from redecorating the lobby and refurbishing the men’s restroom to purchasing a new Grand drape for the stage. It raised money and purchased numerous items which were needed from time to time such as computers, microphones, a washer and dryer, a piano and many more things over time. A recent contribution helped underwrite the purchase of a new state-of-the-art sound system. According to Ms. Hooper, the Women’s Guild slogan for 2015-16 will be “Still Making a Difference!” To their credit, several of its current members were there in the early years and are still making a difference by playing an active role in Guild activities. We are blessed by their continued contributions and active participation, says Ruth. Their continued efforts are invaluable. Other officers selected at a luncheon held at the Chain of Lakes Complex for the upcoming year includes Jan Kesler, Vice President, Clay Kellam, Secretary, Sandra Adamowicz, Treasurer and Jackie Billo as Corresponding Secretary.
