Last Monday, August 22, the City Commissioners decided to do the annual review of the City Clerk, City Attorney and City Manager during the public commission meeting. This was the first time this review had been done publicly, although the written reviews are always public record. As the reviews finished after almost an hour, Commissioner Willie Twyford brought forth a motion to terminate City Manager Deric Feacher due to what he felt was lack of communication and leadership (you can read more in The Ledger article as well as in this editorial. If you want to hear the review first hand, you can listen to is on the City's Website. Start at 111:00 on the timeclock). He was informed by the City Attorney that he could not bring an actionable item that wasn't on the agenda without the supermajority of the board voting to change their own rules to allow for a vote. There was not an appetite for that amongst the other commissioners so he instead requested that it be placed on the next commission meeting agenda for Tuesday, September 13.
The Chamber of Commerce Executive Committee of the Board of Directors would like to issue the following statement: We have had nothing but an outstanding relationship with City Manager Deric Feacher and his team at the City – from the top through all levels of City staff. We have also enjoyed a productive and positive relationship with the City Commission in the past. The energy, positivity and forward movement of this community in the last five years has been incredible and much of that is attributed to the collaboration, communication and cooperation of the City, economic development organizations, business owners and community members. We are often told this is what has set us apart from other communities – giving us the competitive edge. We don't believe what happened at the last commission meeting is the way we operate in Winter Haven and it sets the wrong tone and perception of our community. We may not always agree but when we disagree we do so with decorum, respect and working together on a path that has the best interests of Winter Haven's future in mind. It is our hope that the Commissioners and City Manager can meet prior to the meeting on the 13th to talk and agree on a path forward and give time for their concerns to be addressed. We have had much forward momentum and we don't want to see that change. So much good has and will come to our community and what happened on Monday does not reflect upon that pride and positivity that is overarching in Winter Haven.
