 One of the best ways to help men and women in the military is to support them in the workplace. Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care Spiritual Care Program Manager Rich Behers, DMin. BCC CFHPC, has received the prestigious Patriot Award for extraordinary support of his employees serving in the Guard and Reserve. The Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) Patriot Award reflects efforts made to support citizen warriors through a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absence as needed.
Family members or employees serving in the National Guard or Reserve nominate their supervisors for supporting their military service. Behers was nominated by Chaplain Mark Jurkowski, a Major in the Air Force Reserves. “Rich never hesitates to support the Reservists in our company by giving us the time off we need and backfilling our positions for us,” wrote Major Jurkowski in his nomination to ESGR. “He verbally supports us throughout the company and backs it up with action. He makes it easy to be a citizen airman.” “What brings me such deep emotions is the memory of what life was like in 1972. I just turned 18 and had my draft card and draft classification. The Vietnam War was winding down and few were being drafted. I never served in the Armed Forces and wished I had.
