Congratulations to Melanie Brown & Cutting Edge Hair Salon on being awarded Small Business of the Month for November! Melanie has taken community service to a whole new level. When she sees a need, she fills it with joy, generosity and resources. With the holidays upon us, many people are visiting the stores trying to find the perfect gifts, but Melanie is spending her time trying to fill the hands of less fortunate children. For the entire month of December, with the help of Freedom Church and Central Florida Healthcare, she is hosting Toys for Our Town by Melanie Brown which is a toy drive that will benefit the children of Winter Haven. All of the toys that are collected will be passed out on Christmas Day at 2:00 p.m. at Freedom Church. Cutting Edge is not the only drop off location! She is working with many local bands, bars and restaurants in hopes to not only help the children but to also give back to local businesses that participate. Some of those drop off locations are Caribbean Bay, Old Grove, Bottoms Up Bar, Old Man Frank’s, Apple Lounge, Brew Hounds Sports Bar, La’s Midway Saloon and Somewhere Sports Bar. Her selfless service doesn’t stop at her incredible toy drive. In recent months, Melanie has spent much of her time raising funds for those in need. Melanie worked with was Xander, a young boy who lived in Winter Haven and was diagnosed with cancer. Being close to his family Melanie decided to help the best way she could; she planned a huge party to celebrate him and bring awareness to cancer. Sadly, two days before the event, Xander passed away. After a consultation with his parents, the party went on to honor his memory and celebrate his life. Melanie believes he was watching the party from heaven. In order to remember him for years to come, Xander’s Legend will be choosing a child every year who is battling cancer and give them a benefit. Melanie’s dedication for helping others is no secret! One man spent a year observing her kindness and reached out to her so that she could help his son Jared who had a mental disability. He asked Melanie to help fulfil a “wish list” his son had and even though Jared didn’t have much time left, Melanie swooped into action and filled as many of his wish items as she could. On receiving the call that Jared was slipping away Melanie rushed to the hospital to be with him and his family and to surround them with love and kindness. There are many many more people and organizations Melanie has helped including The Boys & Girls Club, Rockin’ on the Ridge, Gator Crawl, Project Eagle, The Humane Society, EggFest, Arts 4 Vets and so much more. She’s looking forward to 2019 so that she can continue to help even more organizations. She spoke with us about the kindness of her coworkers, her friends and our community in jumping in to help when she asks. When asked why she does this, Melanie’s response was “If you have a gift and you do nothing with it, shame on you.” She believes that we all have something to bring to our communities and we should never keep those gifts hidden. Congratulations to Melanie on being awarded this prestigious award! We are excited to continue to see you helping the people in our community thrive.
