Dr. Randy K. Avent, President of Florida Polytechnic University (Florida Poly), is the newest member of the Florida High Tech Corridor Council. Avent joined Florida Poly as its inaugural president in 2014. Since then, he has been committed to providing a technology-rich environment that fosters innovation, addresses real-world problems and positions Florida Poly as a university focused on educating the next generation of high tech business leaders. Avent’s experience in higher education institutions dedicated to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math will help guide The Corridor in its mission to grow Florida’s high tech industry through partnerships that support research, marketing, workforce and entrepreneurship. Prior to joining Florida Poly, Avent served as the associate vice chancellor of research and a professor of computer science at North Carolina State University (NC State). During his time at NC State, he spearheaded efforts to grow the university’s research program and developed a new research institute. His resume also boasts experience from MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory, where he served as a group leader, associate technology officer and chief scientist.
Avent holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Mathematics and Engineering from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; two master’s degrees, one in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University and the other in Biomedical Mathematics and Engineering from the University of North Carolina; and a bachelor’s degree in Zoology from the University of North Carolina. Avent is also a 2005 graduate of the Greater Boston Executive Program at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, and a Fellow of the IEEE. About The Florida High Tech Corridor Council The Florida High Tech Corridor Council is an economic development initiative of the University of Central Florida (UCF), the University of South Florida (USF) and the University of Florida (UF). The mission of The Corridor is to grow high tech industry and innovation through partnerships that support research, marketing, workforce and entrepreneurship. A partnership involving more than 25 local and regional economic development organizations (EDOs), 14 state colleges and 12 CareerSource boards, The Corridor is co-chaired by the presidents of UCF, USF and UF. The Corridor includes the presidents of two state colleges, the president of the Florida Institute of Technology and representatives of high tech industry. The unique partnership has resulted in a strategic approach to high tech economic development that supports matching funds research, marketing, workforce development and entrepreneurship leveraging governmental, EDO and corporate budgets on a regional rather than local basis.
