The bright lights of Broadway are calling for Kristen Brock. The new Harrison School for the Arts graduate will be traveling to New York City this month for a national competition recognizing outstanding student achievement in theatre arts. Brock is one of two Orlando-area finalists for the National High School Musical Theatre Awards competition, also known as the Jimmy Awards. She will travel to New York City on June 18 to begin intensive study with Broadway directors and coaches. With their help, she will fine tune her performance before the Theatre Awards on June 25. “I’m very excited,” Brock said. “I love being able to take on a character, make it my own and play someone else.” Brock was selected for the Broadway competition during the recent Applause Awards in Orlando. Davenport School of the Arts was one of two middle schools that were invited to perform during the awards show to honor their impressive production of “The Lion King Jr.” Harrison School for the Arts took home 30 awards for its productions of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” and “Into the Woods.” Brock received two awards for her portrayals of Millie Dillmount and The Witch. “I’m not sure I’ve ever met someone who is so wonderfully gifted, superbly focused, and yet so genuinely kind as Kristen,” said Daryl Ward, principal of Harrison School for the Arts. “Her talent and hard work will certainly take her places, but her big heart and humble spirit will leave an even larger legacy. We’re honored to call her an alumni.” Brock will attend Montclair State University this fall to pursue a degree in musical theatre. She credits Harrison for giving her a solid foundation for her acting career. “Harrison is incredible; it’s been like a second home to me,” Brock said.
