Jennifer Burke of Winter Haven Newest Member of Board of Directors of Meals on Wheels of Polk County1/14/2019 Meals on Wheels of Polk County welcomed Jennifer Burke of Winter Haven as the newest member of its board of directors during its regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, January 9. A native of Winter Haven, Burke is a 24-year employee of the City of Winter Haven’s Parks & Recreation Department. She currently is assigned to the city’s Senior Recreation Center. She also serves as a volunteer for Winter Haven-based Age Friendly. “We are delighted to have Jennifer on our board. Her experience in serving the needs of seniors at the city’s Senior Recreation Center and through Age Friendly, will be very beneficial as we continue to work to find new ways to improve our service to our senior clients,” said MOW Chairman Caroline Santiago.
Burke is a graduate of Winter Haven who is now pursuing her BA in Public Administration at Polk State College in Winter Haven. She and her husband, Kevin Burke, reside in Winter Haven with their two daugthers, Kinley, 4 and Adalynn, 2. Based at 620 Sixth Street in Winter Haven, MOW Polk County is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization that prepares and delivers 80,000 meals per year to homebound people residing in Winter Haven, Auburndale, Lake Alfred, Dundee, Haines City, Lake Hamilton, Davenport and parts of Lakeland. On a typical weekday, MOW volunteers visit 370 homes to provide clients who are mostly over the age of 65 with nutritious, freshly-cooked, hot meals. In addition to delivering meals, MOW volunteers are very often the only people the organization’s clients have a chance to interact with on a daily basis. Meals on Wheels of Polk County welcomes volunteers to serve as drivers, kitchen workers, thrift store clerks, fundraisers and board members. Anyone wishing to become a MOW volunteer or client should call Susan Eldridge at 299-1616. Information also can be obtained by visiting the MOW Web site at www.mealsonwheelspolk.com. Because it receives no government funding, Meals on Wheels of Polk County relies solely on fundraising initiatives, thrift store sales and donations from individuals, corporate sponsors, churches and non-profit charitable organizations to carry on its mission of feeding and interacting with homebound citizens of all ages and backgrounds.
