Knights of Columbus Council 7091 brought extra joy to an estimated 150 youngsters who attend St. Matthew Catholic Church in Winter Haven by treating them to an Easter Egg Hunt on the church grounds on Easter Sunday. After attending Mass inside the church, where they heard the joyful message of Jesus Christ’s resurrection from Pastor Nicholas O’Brien, the kids, ages 1 to 12, converged on a field next to the church to gather 3,000 plastic eggs distributed by the knights. It took the kids less than five minutes to pick up all the eggs once Father O’Brien gave the “go” signal after blessing the eggs, as well as the children and their parents.
Before participating in the event, the boys and girls fulfilled their spiritual obligations by attending the standing-room-only 11:00 am Mass celebrated by Father O’Brien. The Easter Egg Hunt was chaired by knight Ed Sheehan, who scattered the eggs in the field along with fellow knights Brian Sharak and George Marhefka, the K of C council’s grand knight. Knights Ken Nelson, Ruben Sanabria and Randy Hale also helped out. Ed Sheehan and his wife, Donna, presented Easter baskets to the two lucky children who found silver and gold eggs in each of three age groups.
