Knights of Columbus Council 7091 of Cypress Gardens and its affiliated Frank J. Durbin Fourth Degree
Assembly 2608 installed new officers for the 2017-2018 Columbian year in a pair of induction ceremonies conducted on Saturday, August 26 in the parish center at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Winter Haven. The council induction began with Father Nicholas O’Brien, pastor of St. Matthew Church and chaplain of Council 7091, calling upon God to guide the new officers in discharging their duties. After the opening prayers, District Deputy Terry Gallardo of Haines City and District Warden Tom Berdis of Winter Haven installed the slate of officers headed by Grand Knight Phil Pierpont. Other newly-inducted officers are Ken Nelson, deputy grand knight; Ruben Sanabria, financial secretary; Adolfo Arteaga, treasurer; Scott Sharak,
warden; Jerry Melnitzke, chancellor; Ed Sheehan, advocate; John Gilson, inside guard and John Hoffer, outside guard. Jim Sharak, Sal Porta and George Marhefka serve as trustees and Father O’Brien provides spiritual guidance as chaplain. As the emissary of Supreme Fourth Degree Master Dennis Stoddard and Florida District Master Robert Read, Robert Higgins of Haines City led the Fourth Degree induction in which Sal Porta was installed for his second consecutive one-year term as Faithful Navigator of the assembly. Other assembly officers are Adolfo Arteaga, captain; Jim Sharak, admiral; George Marhefka, comptroller; Dan Marino, pilot; Phil Pierpont, scribe; Robert Pezanowski, purser; John Gilson, inner sentinel; and John Ondrovic, outer sentinel. Richard Bomkamp, Jerry Melnitzke and Scott Sharak are trustees. Before the ceremonies, members of the council and assembly, their wives and special guests gathered at St. Matthew Church for a Mass celebrated by Father O’Brien. The officer installations were followed by a buffet style dinner arranged by knight Jerry Melnitzke and his wife, Kristel. Knights Bob Bigg, Ruben Sanabria, Jim Sharak and Brian Sharak set up space in the parish center for the ceremonies and dinner that followed.
