Knights of Columbus Council 7091 recognized Ken Nelson as “Knight of the Month” and John and Frances Gilson as “Family of the Month” for their distinguished service to the K of C, St. Matthew Church and the greater Winter Haven community. The awards were announced and presented by Grand Knight Phil Pierpont at a meeting of the K of C Council on February 26 in the parish center at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Winter Haven. Nelson, who serves the council as Deputy Grand Knight and Public Relations Director, was cited for arranging publication of 130 K of C stories in the local media during the past year. He also worked on the council’s charity Tootise Roll Drive, youth Free Throw contest and Easter Egg Hunt; kept minutes of council meetings as a substitute Recorder and was involved in church activities, including outreach to The Mission. In addition to handling PR for the council, he serves as PR Director for its affiliated Frank J. Durbin Fourth Degree Assembly and K of C Region 3, and in the community serves on the advisory board of Catholic Charities Polk County Ministries and the Meals on Wheels board of directors. He also is an active in the Dick Pope/Polk County chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association. He and his wife, Elsa, attend St. Matthew Church. They have one grown son and two grandsons.
John and Frances Gilson were recognized for coordinating the council’s 2017 Tootsie Roll Drive that raised funds for Polk County Special Olympics, the Achievement Academy and the Alliance for Independence. In addition to overseeing the Tootsie Roll Drive, Gilson serves the council in the elective position of Inside Guard, is a member of the Frank J. Durbin Fourth Degree Assembly 2608 and serves as an usher and choir member at St. Matthew Church. He also drives a vehicle that transports parishioners back and forth from the parking lot to the church sanctuary at weekend Masses. Frances Gilson also is a member of the church’s Prayer Shawl ministry. The Gilsons reside in the Cypress Creek Village community in Winter Haven where John serves as a member of the Citizens Awareness Panel. The couple has three grown children and six grandchildren. Knights of Columbus Council 7091 provides financial aid to a wide range of local charities, in addition to supporting pro-life activities and sponsoring special projects for the youth in the greater Winter Haven area, including the annual Spelling Bee, Basketball Free-Throw Championship and Easter Egg Hunt.
