Knights of Columbus Council 7091 brought extra joy to an estimated 200 youngsters who attend St. Matthew Catholic Church in Winter Haven by treating them to an Easter Egg Hunt on the church grounds on Easter Sunday. After attending standing-room only 11:00 am Masses in the main church and parish center, where they celebrated Jesus Christ’s resurrection and heard a special taped message from Diocese of Orlando Bishop John Noonan about the true meaning of Easter, the kids, ages 1 through 12, gathered on the edge of a field next to the church with their parents to await the start of the annual K of C event. Once Father Nicholas O’Brien, pastor of St. Matthew Church, gave the “go” signal after bestowing a special blessing on the children and their parents, it took the resourceful kids less than three minutes to gather 3,000 plastic eggs scattered in the field by knights prior to the Masses. The K of C Easter Egg Hunt was chaired by knight Ed Sheehan, with assistance from fellow knights George Marhefka, John Ondrovic, Ken Nelson, Ruben Sanabria and Randy Hale. The two lucky children in each of three age groups who found silver and gold eggs were presented with special prizes after the event by Ed Sheehan, his wife, Donna and June Marhefka.
