Knights of Columbus Council 7091 of Cypress Gardens invites boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14 to participate in a basketball clinic and the 2018 K of C Free Throw Championship on Sunday, January 28 in the basketball arena on the Winter Haven campus at Polk State College (PSC). Both events are free. Registration for the K of C contest will be from 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm, followed by the basketball clinic orchestrated by PSC head basketball coach Brandon Giles and varsity players from 12:30 pm to 1:00 pm. The Free Throw Championship begins after the clinic. The Free Throw Championship features competition in 12 separate age brackets: Boys 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14; Girls 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14. All contestants will shoot 15 free throws, with the winner in each age bracket determined by who makes the most shots. Shoot offs will be used to break ties.
All free throw shooters must have parental consent, fill out an entry form and present a valid birth certificate or proof of age provided by a school before competing. The age of the contestants on January 1, 2018 determines the division they compete in. “We encourage boys and girls who enjoy basketball to take advantage of the opportunity to hone and demonstrate their basketball skills by participating in the PSC clinic and the K of C Free Throw Championship on Sunday, January 28 in the PSC basketball arena,” said event organizer Billy Bob Morris. The players who finish first in each division will receive a trophy and advance to the district K of C Free Throw Championship. District winners will earn the right to compete in a regional round where berths in the state championship will be determined. According to Morris, the clinic will teach boys and girls basic basketball skills such as dribbling, passing and free throw shooting. “It will also serve as a ‘tune up’ for the K of C competition,” he said. For more information on the K of C Free Throw Championship, call Morris at 863-289-2784 or Ken Nelson at 863-307-2207. The K of C Free Throw Championship is a major youth initiative of the Knights of Columbus. Every year more than 200,000 boys and girls participate in competitions sponsored by local K of C councils throughout the United States.
