Boys and girls ages 9 to 14 are invited by Knights of Columbus Council 7091 of Cypress Gardens to compete in the 2019 K of C Free Throw Championship on Saturday, January 26 in the basketball arena on the Winter Haven campus of Polk State College (PSC).
The contest will follow a Basketball Clinic conducted by PSC head basketball coach Brandon Giles and varsity basketball players. Both events are free.Registration for the K of C event will be from 12:00 pm to 12:30 pm, while the Basketball Clinic will be between 12:30 pm and 1:00 pm. The Free Throw Championship starts immediately after the clinic.
The Free Throw Championship features 12 age brackets: Boys 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14; Girls 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14. All contestants will shoot 15 free throws, with the winner in each age bracket determined by who makes the most shots. Shoot offs will be used to break ties.
All boys and girls must fill out an entry form, present a valid birth certificate or proof of age provided by a school and have parental consent before competing. The age of each contestant on January 1, 2019 determines what division he or she competes in.
“We encourage boys and girls who enjoy basketball to take full advantage of the chance to improve their basketball skills by participating in the PSC clinic and the K of C Free Throw Championship,” said knight Billy Bob Morris, chairman of the event. The first place finisher in each division will receive a trophy and earn a berth in a district K of C Free Throw Championship. District winners will advance to a regional round where berths in the state championship will be determined.
According to Morris, the clinic will teach boys and girls basic basketball skills such as dribbling, passing and free throw shooting. “It will also serve as a ‘tune up’ for the K of C competition,” he said.
