A six-member Knights of Columbus Honor Guard assisted Diocese of Orlando Bishop John Noonan and Father Nicholas O’Brien, pastor of St. Matthew Church, in celebrating a Mass during which 18 young Catholics received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday, September 23. Attired in full regalia, the Honor Guard members lined the church’s aisle as Bishop Noonan and Father O’Brien made their way to the altar to celebrate the Mass for an estimated 100 faithful, including the newly-confirmed church members, their sponsors, relatives and friends.
Constituting the Honor Guard were Jim Sharak, John Ondrovic, Bob Bigg, Chris Eirich, Tom Habina and Arnold Saunders. They all are members of the Frank J. Durbin Fourth Degree Assembly 2608, the patriotic/ceremonial arm of Knights of Columbus councils 7091 of Cypress Gardens and 16151 of St. Anthony Church in Lakeland. The young people prepared for Confirmation by studying their faith over a period of several months with volunteer catechists directed by Richard Monteverde, the church’s director of faith formation.
