![]() Knights of Columbus Council 7091
of Cypress Gardens honored its June service award winners at a meeting on July 23 in the parish center at St. Matthew Church in Winter Haven. Grand Knight Sal Porta presented Chris Eirich with the “Knight of the Month” award and announced George and June Marhefka as winners of the “Family of the Month” award. They received certificates for their distinguished service to the K of C, St. Matthew Church and the Winter Haven community. Eirich was honored for his significant contributions in terms of time and talent to the council, its Frank J. Durbin Fourth Degree Assembly 2608 and St. Matthew Church. He serves as the council’s liaison to St. Matthew in his role as Church Director.
Eirich consistently leads the council in hours devoted to visiting and comforting the sick; serves as a Eucharistic minister, usher and greeter at St. Matthew Church and volunteers at the church’s Regenerations Thrift Store in downtown Winter Haven. He is a member of the Fourth Degree Honor Guard and chairs a Fourth Degree program that provides clothing for veterans making the transition from military to civilian life. He is a past Grand Knight of the council and past Faithful Navigator of the assembly. George and June Marhefka were recognized for their ongoing support of K of C charity and youth programs, including the annual Tootsie Roll Drive that raises funds for intellectually challenged children and adults. They also helped Catholic Charities Polk County Ministries raise funds for its initiatives through their involvement in Catholic Charities’ Kentucky Derby Day and Detroit Tigers Spring Training fund raisers. A past Grand Knight, George Marhefka currently serves the council a trustee and is Comptroller of the Frank J. Durbin Fourth Degree Assembly which he also serves as an Honor Guard member. June Marhefka is involved in the community as a driver for Meals on Wheels. Knights of Columbus Council 7091 donates funds to local charities, supports pro-life activities and sponsors a number of projects for youth in the greater Winter Haven area, including an annual Spelling Bee, Basketball Free Throw Championship and Easter Egg Hunt.
