The Department of Economic Opportunity has released the Labor Market Information for the month of April, 2018. The national unemployment rate edged down to 3.9 percent, after a steady rate of 4.1 which held for six consecutive months. The number of unemployed which is at 6.3 million is also a slight decrease. Nationally, job openings increase in durable goods manufacturing (+33,000) and information (+26,000) and there was a decrease in finance and insurance (-84,000). Florida's Unemployment Rate
Florida’s unemployment rate remained also unchanged at 3.9, holding for yet another month; the figure however is down 0.4% from a year ago. There were 398,000 jobless Floridians out of a labor force of 10,204,000. Florida’s seasonally adjusted total non-agricultural employment was 8,730,400 in April 2018, an increase of 9,600 jobs (+0.1 percent) over the month. The state gained 178,400 jobs over the year, an increase of 2.1 percent. Nationally, the number of jobs rose 1.6 percent over the year. Polk County Nonagricultural Employment The unemployment rate in the CareerSource Polk region (Polk County) was 3.7 percent in April 2018. This rate was lower if compared to the region's year ago rate of 4.6 percent. To view an interactive graph of Florida's total nonagricultural employment, click here. • The Lakeland‐Winter Haven MSA annual job growth rate compared to all the metro areas in the state in professional and business services was 3.2 percent) in April 2018. • The mining, logging, and construction (+6.9 percent); professional and business services (+3.7 percent); leisure and hospitality (+3.3 percent); trade, transportation, and utilities (+3.2 percent); other services (+1.7 percent); and government (+1.1 percent) industries grew faster in the metro area than statewide over the year. • Other industries gaining jobs included: trade, transportation, and utilities (+1,800 jobs); professional and business services (+1,100 jobs); mining, logging, and construction (+900 jobs); leisure and hospitality (+800 jobs). • The government (+300 jobs) gained over the year; manufacturing (+600 jobs). • The education and health services (-300 jobs) and information (-100 jobs) industries lost jobs over the year.
