Meals on Wheels of Polk County Welcomes Trish and Doug Stanforth as Newest Volunteer Board Members12/19/2019 Trish and Doug Stanforth of Winter Haven have been welcomed as the newest members of the volunteer board of directors of Winter Haven-based Meals on Wheels of Polk County. In addition to serving on the board, the Stanforths continue to deliver food to an estimated 15 homebound MOW clients on a route in Winter Haven. They became affiliated with MOW as volunteer drivers more than two years ago. “We are delighted to welcome this wonderful couple to our board of directors. The experience gained by Trish and Doug in working together to deliver meals to our clients gives them a unique perspective for serving on our board,” said MOW Executive Director Susan Eldridge in announcing their addition to the board. Before retiring and moving to Winter Haven about four years ago, the Stanforths worked in the oil and gas sectors in the western part of the United States and managed retirement communities in the U.S. and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. They are members of the Winter Haven Worship Center and have four grown children, 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Based at 620 Sixth Street in Winter Haven, MOW of Polk County is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization that prepares and delivers nearly 90,000 meals per year to homebound people residing in Winter Haven, Auburndale, Lake Alfred, Dundee, Haines City, Lake Hamilton, Davenport and parts of Lakeland. On a typical weekday, MOW volunteers visit nearly 370 homes to provide clients who are mostly over the age of 65 with nutritious, freshly-cooked, hot meals. In addition to delivering meals, MOW volunteers are very often the only people the organization’s clients interact with on a daily basis. Meals on Wheels welcomes volunteers to serve as drivers, kitchen workers, thrift store clerks, fundraisers and board members. Anyone wishing to become a MOW volunteer or client can contact Susan Eldridge, MOW’s executive director, at 299-1616. Information is also available on the MOW website at www.mealsonwheelspolk.com. Because it receives no government funding, Meals on Wheels of Polk County depends solely on fundraisers, thrift store sales and donations from individuals, corporate sponsors, churches and non-profit charitable organizations to carry on its mission of feeding and interacting with homebound citizens of all ages and backgrounds.
