As the topsy-turvy 2016 political season approaches its climax, the Florida Lecture Series at Florida Southern College has invited well-known political scientist Dr. Susan MacManus to kick off its 2016-2017 season. Dr. MacManus, distinguished professor of public administration and political science at the University of South Florida, will present her lecture, “Florida 2016!,” at 7 p.m., Sept. 8 in Branscomb Auditorium on the FSC campus. She will discuss Florida’s pivotal role in the national election as well as topics and trends in what is sure to be a lively lecture about an even livelier election. The author of several books, Dr. MacManus is a familiar figure in the media, offering insightful commentary about the state of politics in Florida and the nation. As Florida’s most-quoted political scientist, she has appeared on every major broadcast and cable television and radio network.
The Florida Lecture Series is presented by the Lawton M. Chiles, Jr., Center for Florida History at FSC and brings leading scholars to campus to explore Florida life and culture from a wide range of disciplines, including history, public affairs, law, literature, and art. Other lecturers in the 2016-2017 season will include the preeminent American historian Douglas Brinkley, professor of history at Rice University, on March 16, speaking on Franklin D. Roosevelt’s environmental legacy; Dr. Gordon Harvey, professor of history at Jacksonville State University, on Oct. 13, speaking on former Florida Governor Reubin Askew; and Polk County native Canter Brown, Jr., on Feb. 16, speaking on early Florida developer and railroad baron Henry B.
