The Annual Meeting and Partnership Celebration of the Consortium of Florida Education Foundations (CFEF) held recently in Tampa provided a great opportunity to surprise Polk Education Foundation (PEF) Executive Director Susan Copeland with a special recognition for her volunteer leadership in the statewide organization. The Jim McKenzie Consortium Champion Award is presented annually to a local education foundation leader who steps up as a volunteer leader to support their peers throughout the state. Through exemplifying a spirit of collegiality and sharing their time and resources with colleagues, these education foundation leaders elevate the work of their colleagues and forward the statewide movement to support students and teachers. This was the fifth year of the award. Copeland was selected out of the 347 staff members from education foundations in the statewide network.
“We know how tirelessly our executive directors work to lead their own local education foundation, so when they also commit themselves to helping their peers grow and improve it is particularly meaningful,” said CFEF president Mary Chance. “Susan’s consistent involvement and gracious leadership has not gone unnoticed by her colleagues!” Ms. Copeland has been active with the CFEF since being named Polk Education Foundation Executive Director in 2005. Throughout her time in her local leadership role, she has been engaged with the CFEF from the beginning, even coming to CFEF meetings as a staff member before being named Executive Director of the PEF. Copeland said she was shocked to hear her name called. “I was listening in and out at the presentation and then something caught my ear that made me say “hey, I did that.” “ I look at those that have been honored before me and don’t think of myself as one that has made their type of impact, so that makes this honor even more meaningful” said Copeland. Highlights of her past and current involvement with the statewide organization include:
