Seven Polk County public high schools will soon implement the AP (Advanced Placement) Capstone diploma program, which readies students for success in college by emphasizing research, collaboration, and communication skills. Auburndale High, George Jenkins High, Kathleen High, Lake Gibson High, Lake Region High, Ridge Community High and Tenoroc High will begin offering AP Capstone in fall 2018. Lakeland High began offering the program last school year, bringing the total number of high schools offering the program to eight. Only approximately 1,500 schools worldwide offer the AP Capstone diploma program. “I am extremely excited about eight of our traditional high schools offering the AP Capstone Diploma option in the 2018-2019 school year and beyond,” said Tami Dawson, regional superintendent for high schools.
“AP Capstone is a challenging progression of courses that enable our students to become independent thinkers, researchers, collaborators, and effective writers across all subjects. These skills are vital for success in college, career, and life. The AP Capstone Diploma offers students at traditional high schools a way to distinguish themselves to colleges and universities with a rigorous, internationally recognized credential.” The AP Capstone program consists of two courses, AP Seminar and AP research, which were developed in response to feedback from higher education faculty and college admissions officers. In AP Seminar, typically taken in the 10th or 11th grade, students read a variety of texts, interpret and synthesize information, and develop evidenced-based arguments, all of which helps them understand complex issues from varying viewpoints. In AP Research, students design, plan and conduct a yearlong research-based project. Students who earn scores of 3 or higher on AP Seminar and AP research assessments, and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing, will earn the AP Capstone Diploma, signifying their attainment of college-level academic and research skills.
