 The City of Winter Haven is hosting a Public Open House for residents to learn more and offer comments regarding the South Lake Howard Trail Nature Park Enhancements Project. The in person open house will be held on Tuesday September 21 from 5 -6:30 pm at the South Lake Howard Nature Park, located at 1570 Lake Howard Drive SW. The Open House will be set up near the picnic areas. Staff will be available to show renderings of proposed recreational improvements to the expanded site, take comments and answer questions. If iinclement weather occurs, a backup site will be the Florida room at Nora Mayo Hall. The South Lake Howard Nature Park was opened in 2001. The park contains stormwater ponds and infrastructure which help filter and clean stormwater before entering Lake Howard from the surrounding neighborhoods and roadways. Developed around the stormwater components are ¼, ½ and 1 mile loop trails, picnic areas and boardwalks. Many residents utilize the Park for exercise, recreation, getting away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy watching the wildlife and birds.
Recently, the City purchased the adjacent property, formerly the home of WSIR Radio. This site will be developed in a similar fashion and serve as an expansion of the nature park. Currently the City is working on the initial steps of stormwater improvements to further help filter and clean run off from adjacent neighborhoods and streets through the site prior to entering Lake Howard. The open house will feature future recreational elements such as expanded trail & boardwalk systems, outdoor classroom, trailhead & parking lot, kayak launch, picnic areas, disc golf, play area and more. The City will be submitting a Florida Recreational Development Assistance Program Grant Application in October to help assist in the funding of these amenities. The City looks forward to planning this phase with involvement from are citizens.
