A physician from Winter Haven Women’s Hospital has received Winter Haven Hospital’s quarterly Physician Recognition Award. Rafique Mahmood, an obstetrics hospitalist, was selected for the honor for the first quarter of 2017. As an OB hospitalist, Dr. Mahmood specializes in providing care for patients in labor. She is part of a specialized team that is available 24/7 at the Women’s Hospital. Dr. Mahmood examines patients, tracks progress of labor, and coordinates care between nurses, anesthesiologists, other obstetricians, and neonatologists.
Dr. Mahmood earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in physics and computer engineering and before focusing on medicine, worked for NASA as an engineer and software developer. She went on to earn her medical degree in 2002, with a focus on women’s health care. She did her OB/GYN residencies in Michigan and Georgia and is board certified. Hospital staff and colleagues who nominated her called her compassionate, and a patient advocate with grace and great patience. One nomination said she was “caring and compassionate towards all of her patients and coworkers and is always willing to teach others.” Another one read, “It is a pleasure to know and work beside Dr. Mahmood.” Dr. Mahmood’s husband attended the surprise ceremony, along with her colleagues and coworkers. The Winter Haven Hospital Physician Recognition Award was established in 2016 to pay tribute to the sacrifices our physicians make in providing the best possible care to all patients.
