Cities all over the state will be celebrating Florida City Government Week October 22 – 28. City government is the government closest to most citizens, and the one with the most direct daily impact upon its residents. The City of Winter Haven will be part of the celebration by offering a number of engaging events to identify what we do best – Enriching the Winter Haven Lifestyle through exceptional service. The Winter Haven Public Library will host week-long displays highlighting a number of City departments including Human Resources, Public Safety and the Parks, Recreation and Culture Departments. Periodically, these information-displays will be staffed and offer games and activities. Don’t miss the Utility Services Department two-hour workshop called “Water in Winter Haven: Today and Tomorrow” planned for October 25, from 1-3 p.m. at the Winter Haven Library. Learn how water is managed in Winter Haven, and how things will change as water becomes more limited. Equipment demonstrations will be part of the program. Mayor Brad Dantzler is hosting Meet the Mayor at the Winter Haven Library Friday, October 26 from 9 – 10 a.m. This is your opportunity to meet Winter Haven Mayor Brad Dantzler, pose for a picture with him, and grab a cup of coffee. The City’s Technology Services Department will host a free Technology Petting Zoo at the Winter Haven Public Library from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, October 26. The petting zoo will include virtual reality demonstrations, a GIS map exhibit, a drone display, kid’s robotics, fiber optic display, and more. The Parks, Recreation and Culture Department is holding a Coloring Contest for all Ages throughout the week at the Library, the Winter Haven Recreational and Cultural Center, and the Senior Center. Those interested can download a coloring sheet and event rules at www.mywinterhaven.com or receive one from one of the participating facilities. All entries must be submitted at one of the facilities by October 26, 2018 for judging. Prizes will be awarded to winners in each age group. Call 291-5656 with questions. If you are a City of Winter Haven solid waste customer, you may receive a knock on the door from your garbage collector and Public Works staff. The Public Works Solid Waste Unit will conduct Customer Visits, stopping at various homes on the collection route to introduce themselves. Those enrolled at the Winter Haven Recreational and Cultural Center After School Program will get time with Mayor Pro Tem Birdsong Wednesday October 24 at 4 p.m. to talk about his involvement with making this community the best it can be. These same students will participate in an Essay Contest titled: “What would I do if I were Mayor!” All entries will be read and judged for prizes. The Mayor will meet with students in 4th through 8th grade from Cypress Junction Montessori School, where he will be asked about City government and his role in making an impact in the City. This meeting will take place at the Winter Haven Public Library October 24 at 11:40 a.m. Commissioner J.P. Powell will visit the Senior Center at 250 Lake Silver Drive at various times during the week to enjoy activities with the participants and discuss various services provided by the City.
