On February 23, 2017, the Winter Haven Optimist Club hosted its 30th annual Youth Appreciation Program at First Baptist Church in Winter Haven. 35 kids from 18 schools were recognized for their academic, social and good citizenship achievements. There were approximately 140 persons in attendance which included 15 teachers or school staff, 12 club members along with parents, grandparents and other family members. Everyone was treated to a spaghetti and meatball dinner along with bread, salad and a cupcake for desert. The kids were given tickets for door prizes and throughout the evening every child was awarded one. It was through the graciousness of our 24 donation sponsors that the evening could take place.
The special guest speaker was Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. He spoke to the children about respect, success, following the rules and believing in themselves. He gave the example of Dr. Seuss being turned down 30 times before getting his first book published. You could tell his speech was from the heart. The Sheriff's Office provided "Goody Bags" and the club inserted bumper stickers and pencils. The kids were given junior deputy badges by the Sheriff and he had them stand, raise their right hand and pledge certain promises. The Sheriff stayed the entire time taking pictures with any child or parent. He also autographed the Optimist Club's certificate of achievement for every child who requested it as well. This program is just one in which the Winter Haven Optimist Club hopes to bring out the best in the kids and help them achieve their goals for the future. This event could not have taken place without the dedication of the teachers, parents and others who are active in the child’s life.
