provided by Merle Bishop, Growth Management Director, City of Winter Haven The Bureau of Economic and Business Research (BEBR) at the University of Florida have shared the “official” 2017 population estimate for the City of Winter Haven as 41,134. The city staff has reviewed this estimate against Certificates of Occupancy issued for new residential permits and concur with this number. This is a 1,610 increase from last year’s 2016 estimate of 39,524, which reflects a 4.07 % annual growth rate. This is a significant population growth rate. The total growth rate in the City’s population since the 2010 Census of 33,874 is 21.43% for an annual average increase of 3.06% (2010 to 2017). Based on the 2016 Florida Estimates of Population published by BEBR, Winter Haven grew by a total of 16.7% from 2010 to 2016, which equals an average annual population increase of 2.78%.
The 2016 BEBR population report ranked the Top 100 Cities in Florida by Percent Change (growth rate) in Population , 2010 to 2016. Based on a growth rate of 2.78% from 2010 to 2016, Winter Haven ranked as the 26th fastest growing city in Florida in 2016. It is expected that the new annual average growth rate of 3.06% (2010 to 2017) will move Winter Haven up in the ranking of fastest growing cities in Florida when the next report is released. Polk County’s total population grew from 602,095 in 2010 to 646,989 in 2016, for a total growth rate of 7.5%. This represents an average annual growth rate of only 1.25%. The City of Lakeland’s population grew from 97,422 in 2010 to 102,507 in 2016 for a total growth rate of only 5.22%. This represents an average annual growth rate of 0.87%. The State’s total population grew from 18,802,847 in 2010 to 20,438,654 in 2016 for a total growth rate of 7.2%. This represents an average annual growth rate of 1.2% over the 6-year period. The state’s population grew by approximately 1.8% from 2015 to 2016. The current annual population growth rate for the United States is approximately 0.69%. Forbes recently ranked the Lakeland-Winter Haven MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) as the 18th fastest growing “city” in the United States.
